WHAT IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT?

A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT (PSA) is a service provided to the community by KPFA for promotion of events and/or announcement of community events for non-profit organizations. A public service announcement is a non-commercial advertisement, ostensibly broadcast for the public good. Public service announcements run in the form of pre-recorded announcements. Announcements usually run at the bottom of each hour.

All events must be submitted by an organization that qualifies as tax-exempt under Internal Revenue Service Tax Code 501 (c) 3. Organizations are allowed one announcement per month - in the form of a pre-recorded public service announcement or community calendar announcement. Only one announcement per organization will be broadcast at any given time.

Pre-recorded public service announcements are recorded for events that collect a fee that will benefit the non-profit organization submitting the request for a PSA, or a fiscal sponsored organization of the non-profit. Public service announcements run anywhere from one to two weeks preceding an event.

The following Public Services announcements can not be accepted:

Rallies/Demonstrations Benefits for Individuals
Book Signings/Public Appearances

Workshops or Classes

You may consider the Community Calendar for such events.

Exceptions to these will be considered on a case by case basis.

How Do I Submit A Request For Broadcast Of A Public Service Announcement On KPFA?

As soon as you are aware that your nonprofit organization is sponsoring an event, please contact the KPFA First Voice Apprenticeship Program. It is recommended organizations submit request at least four to six weeks in advance of the event. Events may not be announced if received less than 21 days in advance. Please note: not all recorded Public Service Announcements are guaranteed to be scheduled. Because of the number of requests received, your announcement may not be scheduled.

How Long Is A Public Service Announcement?

Finished announcements will be exactly 60 seconds.  Therefore, scripts should total no more than 50 seconds reading time. All scripts are subject to editing by the Apprenticeship Program or other programming staff at the station.

Who Will Produce My Public Service Announcement?

Public Service Announcements are recorded on Wednesday beginning at 10:00AM until 11:00AM. To schedule an appointment contact the KPFA Apprenticeship Program. Please bring the following to appointment:

  • TWO (2) typed or computer printed copies of your script.
  • One minute of instrumental music in CD format.
  • A copy of 501 (c) 3 letter or documentation from fiscal sponsor.
Can I Produce My Own Public Service Announcement?

If you choose to record your own Public Service Announcement, it must meet the KPFA PSA guidelines, must be ready for broadcast, and will need to be approved by the Program Coordinator. A copy of script and copy of 501 (c) 3 letter must be included with submission.

If your event doesn't meet the Public Service Announcement requirement your organization may submit event information to the Community Calendar .
